The Parts of an Implant

There are three main parts to a dental implant:

The Fixture

The fixture or metal post is surgically inserted into the jawbone and fuses with bone and tissue. The fixture is the part that is placed below the gum line and won’t be seen. In essence, this portion of the implant acts as an artificial tooth root.

Through a naturally occurring process known as osseointegration the jawbone and tissue surrounding the implant will grow around it over the course of a couple months. Since the fixture is made from biocompatible metal like titanium it allows it to bond easily with natural tissues and bones to become one. Osseointegration is what makes dental implants successful and allows the restoration to last a patient’s entire life with the proper care.

The Abutment

Once the implant has been inserted and given several months to heal your family dentist in Naperville, IL will then place the abutment over the top portion of the implant. The abutment will rest above the gumline and its sole purpose is to connect the dental crown to the implant. This attachment won’t be added onto the implant until after osseointegration has occurred.

The Dental Restoration

This is the portion that is designed to look and function like a real tooth. This could either be a dental crown to replace a single tooth or a complete set of dentures to replace all of your teeth. Depending on the design of your implant, the crown or other restoration may either be cemented or screwed into place over the abutment.
